Natera agreed to pay $9.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging its billing communications for certain genetic screening tests did not clearly inform patients about potential out-of-pocket costs.

Who can file a claim?

Class members must meet all of the following criteria:

Natera performed noninvasive prenatal testing or genetic carrier screening on them between July 10, 2019, and Sept. 2, 2026.

Natera billed them more than $249 for NIPT without microdeletions, more than $349 for NIPT with microdeletions or more than $349 for genetic carrier screening.

They paid some or all of the bill out of their own pocket because insurance or a third party did not fully cover the procedures.

The settlement divides the class into two main groups:

Group A: Individuals for whom Natera’s records show proof of out-of-pocket payment above the threshold of $249 or $349, depending on the test

Group B: Individuals for whom Natera’s records do not show proof of payment above those amounts but who attest to the company billing those amounts
