About This Settlement
The FTC is sending a second round of checks to people who lost money to a student loan debt relief scheme that used many names including Mission Hills Federal, Federal Direct Group, National Secure Processing, and The Student Loan Group.
The FTC sued these companies and won. According to the lawsuit, these companies charged illegal upfront fees and falsely promised to lower or wipe out student loan payments. Despite their promises, they did not use the money they collected from their customers to pay down student loan balances and did not get student loan balances forgiven.
As a result of the lawsuit, the defendants paid money to provide refunds and are banned from telemarketing and debt relief services.
The FTC first sent payments in March 2024, which resulted in more than $3.4 million in refunds. Because there is still money remaining in the fund, the FTC is sending 10,138 checks totaling more than $627,000 to people who cashed their first check and paid the defendants more than $430.
If you get a check, please cash it within 90 days.
