About This Settlement
Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) has agreed to a $7.6 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that it failed to prevent a 2023 data breach that compromised patient information.
The Hospital Sisters Health System settlement benefits individuals whose personally identifiable information or personal health information was compromised in the data breach that occurred on HSHS’ network systems between Aug. 16 and 27, 2023.
The Hospital Sisters Health System data breach class action lawsuit claimed HSHS failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures that could have prevented a 2023 data breach. The breach reportedly compromised sensitive patient information including Social Security numbers, health insurance information, driver’s license numbers and more.
HSHS, a health system with 15 hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin, has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $7.6 million to resolve this data breach class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Hospital Sisters Health System settlement, class members can receive either a cash payment or a financial monitoring benefit.
Class members who experienced actual, documented losses as a result of the data breach can receive up to $5,000 in compensation for out-of-pocket expenses such as identity theft losses, credit fees, ID replacement costs and more.
Class members who did not experience documented losses can receive an alternative cash payment. The amount of these payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed with the settlement.
All class members are eligible for two years of free financial monitoring through CyEx Financial Shield. This service includes $1 million in financial fraud insurance as well as monitoring for identity theft, unauthorized transactions and more.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Nov. 14, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Dec. 4, 2025.
