$3.6M Anthem denied benefits class action settlement

Anthem agreed to pay $3.625 million in a class action settlement to resolve claims it wrongfully denied coverage for proton beam radiation therapy for prostate cancer.

The Anthem settlement benefits individuals identified by Anthem who received proton beam radiation therapy for prostate cancer but whose treatments were not covered by insurance.

According to the insurance class action lawsuit, Anthem denied coverage for proton beam radiation therapy for prostate cancer despite the treatment being medically necessary. Plaintiffs in the case say that, due to these unfairly denied benefits, they were forced to pay out of pocket for these treatments.

Anthem and its affiliated Blue Cross Blue Shield health plans are part of Elevance Health, a health insurance company that offers a variety of plans, including Medicare Advantage and Affordable Care Act marketplace plans.

Anthem has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $3,625,000 class action settlement to resolve the allegations.

Under the terms of the Anthem settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the amount they paid out of pocket for proton beam radiation therapy. Class members who paid more will receive a larger share of the settlement fund. Exact payment amounts will vary.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is July 27, 2026.

The final approval hearing for the Anthem class action settlement is scheduled for Aug. 19, 2026.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Oct. 10, 2026.
