$62.1M Hyundai and Kia airbag class action settlement

Hyundai and Kia have agreed to a $62.1 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that certain vehicles were equipped with defective airbag control units.

The Hyundai and Kia airbag class action settlement benefits current and former owners and lessees of certain Hyundai Sonata, Kona and Veloster series and Kia optima and Sedona series as of April 14, 2025.

The Hyundai and Kia airbag class action lawsuit claims that certain vehicles were equipped with defective ZF-TRW airbag control units. These units allegedly malfunctioned and caused the vehicles’ airbags to fail during a collision.

Hyundai and Kia are South Korea-based automotive manufacturers that sell vehicles under their own names as well as Genesis and other brands.

Hyundai and Kia have not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $62.1 million settlement to resolve the Hyundai and Kia airbag class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Hyundai and Kia airbag class action settlement, class members can receive reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses related to the airbag control unit recalls. This includes rental car expenses, towing charges, childcare expenses, repair costs and lost wages. Class members can also receive residual payments of up to $350 for recalled vehicles and up to $150 for unrecalled vehicles.

The settlement also provides a new parts warranty for recalled vehicles, a robust inspection program, an outreach program to increase recall completion rates and a rental car reimbursement and loaner vehicle program.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Aug. 25, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Sept. 29, 2025.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by March 29, 2027.

A similar $8.5 million settlement for Mitsubishi airbag units and a $78.5 million settlement for Toyota airbag control units are currently still open for filing claims.
